The Wife of Noble Character (Proverbs 31: 10 - 31)

10 A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies.
11 Her husband has full confidence in her and lacks nothing of value.
12 She brings him good, not harm, all the days of her life.
13 She selects wool and flax and works with eager hands.
14 She is like the merchant ships, bringing her food from afar.
15 She gets up while it is still dark; she provides food for her family and portions for her servant girls.
16 She considers a field and buys it; out of her earnings she plants a vineyard.
17 She sets about her work vigorously; her arms are strong for her tasks.
18 She sees that her trading is profitable, and her lamp does not go out at night.
19 In her hand she holds the distaff and grasps the spindle with her fingers.
20 She opens her arms to the poor and extends her hands to the needy.
21 When it snows, she has no fear for her household; for all of them are clothed in scarlet.
22 She makes coverings for her bed; she is clothed in fine linen and purple.
23 Her husband is respected at the city gate, where he takes his seat among the elders of the land.
24 She makes linen garments and sells them, and supplies the merchants with sashes.
25 She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come.
26 She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue.
27 She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness.
28 Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her:
29 "Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all."
30 Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting;but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised.

31 Give her the reward she has earned, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate.

Must Read - Proverbs (Old Testament)

I am loving the book of Proverbs. It is so chockful of wisdom. Right now, I am reading chapters in the mid-20s and here are some samples of verses that I really like:

Proverbs 24: 10
If you falter in times of trouble, how small is your strength!

Proverbs 24: 16-18
For though a righteous man falls seven times, he rises again, but the wicked are brought down by calamity. Do not gloat when your enemy falls; when he stumbles, do not let your heart rejoice, or the LORD will see and disapprove and turn his wrath away from him.

Proverbs 24: 29
Do not say, "I'll do to him as he has done to me; I'll pay that man back for what he did."

Proverbs 24: 33-34
A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest- and poverty will come on you like a bandit and scarcity like an armed man.

Proverbs 25: 6-7
Do not exalt yourself in the king's presence, and do not claim a place among great men; it is better for him to say to you, "Come up here," than for him to humiliate you before a nobleman.

Proverbs 25: 9-10
If you argue your case with a neighbor, do not betray another man's confidence, or he who hears it may shame you and you will never lose your bad reputation.

Proverbs 25: 15
Through patience a ruler can be persuaded, and a gentle tongue can break a bone.

Proverbs 25: 19
Like a bad tooth or a lame foot is reliance on the unfaithful in times of trouble.

Proverbs 25: 21-22
If your enemy is hungry, give him food to eat; if he is thirsty, give him water to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head, and the LORD will reward you.

Proverbs 26: 11
As a dog returns to its vomit, so a fool repeats his folly.

Proverbs 26: 12
Do you see a man wise in his own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for him.

Proverbs 26: 14
As a door turns on its hinges, so a sluggard turns on his bed.

Proverbs 26: 17
Like one who seizes a dog by the ears is a passer-by who meddles in a quarrel not his own.

Proverbs 27: 2
Let another praise you, and not your own mouth; someone else, and not your own lips.

Obama's Self-Control

I have watched Barack Obama in several of the telecasted debates and I am impressed by his style of delivery.

Obama always projects a sense of peace. He is very calm when responding to tough questions. He treats his opponents respectfully and is often able to effectively deflect potentially heated arguments.

In yesterday's debate in Ohio, Obama also showed humility, by conceding a point to Hillary Clinton. Hillary felt that Obama's denouncement of Minister Louis Farrakhan's (of the Nation of Islam) past anti-semitic statements was not enough. Clinton said that Obama should take a stronger stand and reject Farrakhan's endorsement. Obama said he thought denouncement and rejection were the same thing, but added that “If Senator Clinton feels that ‘reject’ is stronger than the word ‘denounce,’ then I’m happy to concede the point, and I would 'reject and denounce' Farrakhan’s support." Instead of being defensive, Obama agreed with Clinton and also lightened the moment - there was scattered laughter in the audience.

What a pro.

Bill Gates' Compound in Medina, Washington

Bill Gates' 5-acre compound in Medina, Washington is valued at $136 Million and is known as one of the most high-tech, ecologically friendly homes in the world.

The building is made mostly of Douglas fir timber salvaged from an abandoned lumber mill. There is a 11,500 square foot living area for the family and the guest wing, equipped with two additional bedrooms, has a 20-seat art deco movie theatre, a 2,100 square foot library - with 10,000 rare hardbacks, Leonardo da Vinci's notebook, the Codex Leicester, which Gates purchased for a little less than $31 Million in 1994.

Gates has the home powered by 100 microcomputers that raise and dim lighting according to outdoor light, and control heating as people enter and leave rooms or fall asleep. As a guest, you are issued e-pins that monitor you as you move throughout the facilities. The pins transmit your favourite music, TV shows, and preferred temperature to the computers, and that is what you get when you enter a room.

The compound also houses a trampoline room, an 18-hole miniature golf course, a 1,000 square foot formal dining room and extensive business and reception facilities.

Guess who's coming to dinner?

Clinton Says "Shame on You Barack Obama"

Hillary Clinton has accused Barack Obama of issuing campaign literature that she says is blatantly false. Clinton went so far as to compare Obama to Karl Rove. An angry Hillary said, "Enough with the speeches and the big rallies and then using tactics right out of Karl Rove's playbook. This is wrong, and every Democrat should be outraged."

Clinton feels that Obama knows that his campaign is touting lies about her health plan. "Sen. Obama knows it is not true that my plan forces people to buy insurance even if they can't afford it," she said. Hillary challenged Barack to meet her in Ohio in order to have a debate about Obama's tactics and behavior in the campaign.

Obama's camp responded via Bill Burton, Obama's spokesman, validating the information in the mailers. "Everything in those mailers is completely accurate, unlike the discredited attacks from Hillary Clinton's negative campaign that have been rejected in South Carolina, Wisconsin, and across America...and the facts are that Sen. Clinton was a supporter of NAFTA and the China permanent trade treaties until this campaign began. And she herself has said that under the Clinton health care plan, she would consider 'going after the wages' of Americans who don't purchase health insurance, whether they can afford it or not."

It's getting hot in here!

Inspired by Lindsey Vonn - Skier Extraordinaire & History Maker

Lindsey Vonn (nee Kildow), 23, has made history. She is the only American woman in 12 years to receive a World Cup crystal globe when she won the downhill title on Friday in Whistler, British Columbia. Lindsey shared that "this has been a dream of mine since I was a little kid. I feel like my childhood dreams are coming true and you can't get any better than that. That's a big check off on my lifetime goals."

Lindsey has an interesting story. She was inspired in grade school by Olympic great - Picabo Street. Picabo was Vonn's idol and Vonn recounts about their first meeting years ago that "meeting her, it was pretty much all over for me. I wanted to be just like her." Street recalls telling Lindsey, "Don't hunch over. Stand up straight. Stand tall. Be proud." At that time, Picabo was in her early 20s, an extremely talented skier and an emerging Olympic star.

Time has shown the truth of Lindsey's words. Two weeks ago, she won the 9th World Cup downhill race of her career in Sestriere, Italy, tying her with Picabo Street and Daron Rahlves for the most in U.S. history. Fast forward to Friday, February 22 and Lindsey has entered the history books again as the first American woman to claim the downhill title since Picabo Street in 1996.

Lindsey has impressed many around her. Her mother, Linda Krohn, says about Lindsey, "when she was 8 years old, she wrote something for school and she said, 'I want to win more medals than anyone ever did. She's always been that way. Really nothing she does surprises me." Her husband, ex-racer Thomas Vonn, says that "she's been a really good skier for a long time, and now she's learning how to dot the I's and cross the T's. She's getting better and smarter ever year." Thomas travels with Lindsey as an unofficial coach and equipment technician. Others are equally bullish about Lindsey. Patrick Riml, U.S. Head women's coach, says that Vonn "is very determined. She wants to be No.1 in the world, and whatever she can do to make that happen, she will."

Growing up, Vonn received a lot of support from her parents. They saw that she was a talented skier and moved the family from Minneapolis to Colorado, in order to give Lindsey access to more challenging downhill courses - 3,450 ft vertical drops vs. 310 feet available in Minneapolis.

Vonn's career has been filled with many inspiring moments. One such episode culminated in her winning the individual U.S. Olympic Spirit Award in the 2006 Torino Olympics. It all started when Vonn crashed during a downhill training run and had to be taken by helicopter to a hospital. She was uninjured, i.e. nothing broken, but was in extreme pain. While in the hospital, Lindsey was visited by Picabo Street and was told bluntly by Picabo that "a real champion would get up and race." Days later, Vonn heeded the tough love and raced, finishing 8th in the downhill. Working through her obvious pain, Vonn ended up finishing 7th in super-G and 14th in slalom. Lindsey didn't win a medal, but inspired many with her courage and determination and went home with the U.S. Olympic Spirit Award.

Lindsey - you are impressive and inspiring. Thank you for your great example. Stay strong. Cheers to the extraordinary!

I Like George Clooney Again. Michael Clayton Saved Him.

The movie Michael Clayton is a must see.

Why?

This movie convinced me that George Clooney was again likable. And that took a whole lot of convincing. Post his ER-days, George came across as an extremely arrogant, pretty boy actor, always trying too hard to appear serious. Post-Michael Clayton, I now think that Clooney is in fact a terrific actor and that even more, he should receive an Oscar for his performance. The movie was that good and George was amazing. He said goodbye to smarminess and posing and was just pure talent.

Wow - I wonder what the world will be like now that I like George Clooney again.

Note: Michael Clayton, directed by Tony Gilroy, has received 7 Oscar nominations including: Best Achievement in Directing, Best Motion Picture of the Year, Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role, Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role, Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role, Best Writing, Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen and Best Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures, Original Score.

Will Ralph Nader Run for President (Again)?

Ralph Nader, the 73-year old (74 on Feb. 27th) consumer advocate, lawyer, and author, may be preparing for another run for President.

Nader is scheduled to appear on NBC's "Meet the Press" on Sunday. In 2004, Nader used this show as a platform to launch his presidential campaign. Apparently, Nader has been in active discussions with several people about potentially joining the current presidential race as the third party.

Throughout his career, Ralph has been a bold voice for the consumer, and has helped found many organizations, including the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Public Citizen, Public Interest Research Group (PIRG), and the Pensions Right Center. He appeared on the cover of Time magazine in 1969 for his role as a consumer advocate.

Aside from his 2004 bid for the presidency, Ralph Nader has actually run for President a total of 4 times: in 1992, 1996, 2000 and 2004. In 1992, he ran as a write-in in the New Hampshire Republican and Democratic primaries. In 1996 and 2000, he represented the Green Party. In 2004, he ran as an independent and was endorsed by the Reform Party.

Will Ralph decide to run in 2008? I can't wait to see what happens on Sunday!

McCain Can't Wait for Fidel Castro to Die

John McCain recently made it clear that he hopes Fidel Castro leaves the planet earth as soon as possible, and never comes back.

In a somewhat tacky comment, McCain - after an argument with Clinton and Obama on the best way to drive changes in Cuba - said about Castro, "I hope he has the opportunity to meet Karl Marx very soon." Karl Marx, author of "The Communist Manifesto", died in 1883.

McCain - like many - strongly believes that no substantial reforms will be made in Cuba until Castro dies. Maybe so, but wishing for his death really is in poor taste.

J.Lo's $6 Million Dollar Babies!

People magazine has reportedly offered Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony $6 Million dollars for rights to the first exclusive pictures of the couple's newborn twins. This is apparently the highest amount ever paid to a celebrity couple for the rights to capture their children on film. Brangelina (Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt) received $4.1 Million for photos of their daughter, Shiloh.

The NY Post cattily compares the $6 Million windfall to the box office grosses of some of J. Lo's less than stellar films - the twins are earning about the same as 2003's "Gigli" (J.Lo and Ben Affleck) and slightly less than 2006's "El Cantante"(J.Lo and Marc Anthony).

People magazine has been the clear winner in celebrity newborn exclusives. The benefit is not always financial, e.g. they paid $1.5 Million for pictures of Christina Aguilera's newborn, but there was no significant increase in their newsstand sales. However, the associated publicity and brand equity can be equally important factors.

According to the NY Post, People makes ~$2.05 for every magazine that sells at the full cover price of $3.99. In order for them to profit from the J.Lo baby pics, People will need to sell an additional 2.9 Million copies over and above the 1.4 Million sales they average each week.

All this is of no concern to J. Lo and Marc Anthony. The couple are currently king and queening it up at a hospital in Long Island, where they are being heavily guarded by hospital security guards and pampered by private chefs and attendants.

Congratulations to J.Lo and Marc Anthony on their Newborns

Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony are the proud parents of twins! J.Lo gave birth earlier today to a healthy baby boy and girl. The babies were born a little after midnight in Long Island, NY. The girl (5lb 7oz) came first and then her brother (6lbs) arrived a few minutes later.

Jennifer's pregnancy was shrouded in secrecy, with no announcement from the couple, despite J. Lo's obvious baby bump. I was one of the outlets (*smile*) to out J. Lo after seeing her in concert last year October (http://kerijam.blogspot.com/2007/10/marc-anthony-and-j-lo-concert.html).

J.Lo and Marc finally confirmed the obvious in November, 2007 at a concert in Miami. Also, Jennifer's Dad, David Lopez, shared earlier in February that the couple were expecting twins. Jennifer is a first time mom of 2, and these are #4 and 5 for Marc.

Congratulations, Marc and J. Lo. Best wishes! You must be thrilled!

I Have Been There!

My 'Come Hither' Voice

Arranging to be picked up from the airport can be interesting. During my interactions with the various booking representatives, I have been addressed as "sir", more than once. Funnily enough, this is after I have been on the phone speaking for over a minute. I always laughingly tell the reps. that I am a "lady", and they always apologize profusely.

The "sir" phenomenon does not happen every time I call...actually, it occurs in less than 1% of my interactions. Either way, I don't lose any sleep over it. I say, go ahead, call me "sir" if you like...I will chalk it up to my having a great "come hither voice". Right???

*Sigh* What's a "sir" to do? ;)

"It's Tastefully Done" - Dina Lohan on Lindsay's Marilyn Monroe Nude Photos

Lindsay Lohan was asked by famed photographer Bert Stern to re-create Stern's well-known 'Last Sitting' photos of Marilyn Monroe. Lindsay is in various stages of undress for these pictures, i.e. she poses nude.

Her father, Michael Lohan, said he would not want to see the pictures, because Lindsay is his daughter. He also added that "Lindsay is an adult, and she knows the direction she wants to take her career. It is her decision." Michael also felt that it was an "amazing thing" for Lindsay to be asked by Bert to do the photos.

Lindsay's mom, Dina Lohan, had the following to say: "It was very tastefully done. I respect the photographer as an artist, so I look at them artistically. For him to call Lindsay 46 years later and to say can you recreate these photos is an honour." Dina further stated that, she "looked at it as art, and as Lindsay doing a character. So I don't look at them like it's Playboy - she was being a character. If you look at it that way, you can look at it as a mother."

Fine, fine and fine. But, I am really tired of people using the "tastefully done" explanation for explicit nude shots. You don't read Playboy for the articles. You are not OK with these shots because they were tastefully done. There is a huge amount of publicity associated with such photos and of course you made bank. Come on, just give us some straight talk, instead of belittling our intelligence. Simply stated, you are OK with your daughter posing nude because the publicity and money made it worthwhile. Sugar coating is not necessary.

Congratulations, Tanya Menzies!!

CONGRATS!!!

Tanya Menzies, a former school mate of mine from Immaculate Conception High School in Jamaica, was recently appointed as CEO of Digicel Tonga in the Pacific. I am so proud of you, Tanya. Congratulations!

For more, see the following excerpt from the Jamaica Observer, Sunday Feb. 10, 2008, article by Mark Wignall:

---------------------

Press releases as reportage usually constitute the epitome of sterility and boredom in news. Something, however, made me scan that one and I eventually became stuck at the point where it said, 'He (O'Brien) spoke of Jamaican Tanya Menzies, who started as a customer care agent with Digicel seven years ago and has recently been appointed as CEO of Digicel Tonga in the Pacific.'

From customer care agent to country manager/CEOTonga in seven years! It hit me then; I needed to highlight this, to get Tanya Menzies' story. On Thursday last, I spoke with Tanya by telephone. It took me about a week to make the link because of her busy schedule.
There are few places which invoke the word 'exotic' quite like the Kingdom of Tonga. It is the only archipelago (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Archipelago) in the Pacific Ocean (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pacific_Ocean) never to have been formally colonised. It lies south of Samoa (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samoa) and east of Fiji (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fiji) and is about a third of the way between New Zealand (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Zealand) and Hawaii (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hawaii).

It is the only surviving monarchy among the island nations which exist in the great expanse of the Pacific Ocean. According to Wikipedia, 'Women and men have equal access to education and health care, and are fairly equal in employment, but women are discriminated against in land holding, electoral politics, and government ministries. However, in Tongan tradition, women enjoy a higher social status than men, a cultural trait that is unique among the insular societies of the Pacific.'

Approximately 74,000 of its 112,000 population live on the main island in the archipelago, Tongatapu. Tonga's GDP per capita at just under US$8000 is more than twice Jamaica's.
Digicel first entered the South Pacific market with its launch in Samoa in November 2006, followed by the launch of Digicel Papua New Guinea in July 2007. Mobile phone penetration is at about 35% in Tonga, still a far way to go to catch up on Jamaica where just about every pigeon, puss, fowl and human has a mobile phone.

That said, the question is, what is a 31-year-old alumna of Immaculate Conception High School doing halfway across the world running Digicel's operation in Tonga? At the age of 24 Tanya Menzies began working as a customer care agent following Digicel's 2001 intervention in Jamaica when they upset the monopoly held by Cable and Wireless.

Said Tanya," After high school I worked in banking then on to Courtleigh Hotel and Suites for a year, then I worked in the family business. It was at that time that I decided to apply for a job with Digicel."

Even before that time Tanya was constantly shopping in her mind for openings, life options. "While working in the family business, I attended the Institute of Management and Production to do a Business Administration diploma course. I started with Digicel as a full-time call centre agent and when Digicel began to offer part-time jobs, I decided to attend the Shortwood Teachers' College to pursue Early Childhood Education."

Tanya knew when to slow her pace in one direction for the sake of personal development and career advancement. "At that point the thought darting through my mind was the opening up of my own pre-school." She paused. "It is still something I would like to pursue in the future."

PARENTS MADE STRICT RULES, TEACHERS MOULDED US

Tanya grew up in St Andrew and lived in Portmore for over 20 years. "I grew up with a sister and a brother," she said. "I went to Alvernia Preparatory then on to Immaculate Conception. The main reason governing my six-year trip through Immaculate was my family's Catholicism.

"I must confess I never thought of religion as a reason for attending a specific school, especially Immaculate, a pedigreed school and not the easiest one to get into.

"Life was really great growing up. I must confess that the home environment had a rule to govern every move, every juncture.Throughout it all, my brother, sister and myself had the support of our parents. Looking back at it now, there must have been times when as a child I may have felt hemmed in by the rules, but as an adult I can confirm that if I had to live my childhood over again it would be as a carbon copy of what happened before."

Tanya admits that at times she found high school challenging. Setting herself high standards, there had to have been times when she had self-doubts. "Not really, she said. "Every teacher I ever interacted with played an important role in my development. High school was a great time for me. There was this unwritten rule where we supported each other, encouraged one another. It was a happy time for me."

Like most young girls, especially the bright ones who are usually found moving around the grounds of Immaculate like pint-sized versions of well-brought up ladies, Tanya had moments when her fantasies took off. "At one point I thought I would pursue acting, a childhood fantasy. On the other hand, I was drawn by those women who were in senior management positions and thought that maybe, one day that would be me."

The youngster that she was already had firm ideas about success. Although there were minor moments of doubt, to Tanya, the goal had to be kept in sight. "During high school there were times when I wasn't sure what life would be like after leaving.

What kept me on track was my refusal to accept disappointment. To overcome that, at some point I decided that I would always put my best effort into any task I had to do and if it didn't work out the way I expected it to, I would try to make the best of the results. Looking back at it now, I realise that I did what I am now doing- recognising that although making the right decisions can be very difficult as one can only assume the results, with preparation, organisation and communication, the right decisions can be made."

Like a lot of high school girls who have been socialised into the mores of the prevailing culture, Tanya summed up what she thought would happen.

"After high school I knew I wanted to immediately start working. At one point I thought I would be married at an early age. I realised that there were a number of things I hadn't done yet. One was finding the right husband; the other was finding the right job."

RISING LIKE A SHINING STAR IN THE DIGICEL FAMILY
Numerous surveys have shown that a majority of salaried persons are in jobs they do not like and are unhappy with either their bosses, remuneration or those other 'comfort needs'. Many of such people remain in those jobs and become mired in stress even as they continue to produce at levels way below what they are capable of.

In time, the low productivity becomes the norm and the longer they remain in such jobs, the easier it becomes for their under-production to be listed and defined as the optimum for the specific job. Where the management is as at similarly poor level, the whole organisation falters and in quick time the public begins to react to the organisational breakdown.

Many persons who fall into this job malaise tell themselves, 'I am going to find another job next week,' until the weeks add up to years. Such persons would be best served by getting fired.Tanya operates 180 degrees from that outlook. "It's been a great adventure; the development, and the training and experience I have received are priceless."

Tanya went on to explain how her training in other areas helped her career. "While in customer care I attended Teachers' College and at the end of my studies, I was promoted to supervisor within the call centre. Within a few months I was given my first big assignment in Digicel Aruba.

"The adventure continued. I then travelled to St Lucia, Trinidad and Tobago, Haiti, and eventually onto the South Pacific. While travelling I was promoted to support manager for T&T, then outbound support manager for Jamaica, then call centre director for Digicel Pacific."

Tanya was moving like a comet and streaking like a shooting star through the skies. "My movement within the organisation was always constant, placing emphasis on learning all areas of the business."

One of her schoolgirl fantasies even came through, albeit with the same penchant she has for planning and organisation. I suspect, however, that Tanya did not open up to me or maybe, I failed to ask the right questions about her personal life.

"Moving to the Pacific was a big step for me. I got married one year ago to Brian (Beckford) who works on the retail rollout team for Digicel South Pacific. That aspect of life is very important to me, especially when one is so very far away from home. "

I AM NO EXCEPTION
I wanted to know if Tanya saw herself as an exception who should be praised, celebrated and encouraged or did she see herself as just another person working to the best of her abilities."At all stages I had the support of my directors but you have to understand one thing. The support can only come when the potential, the will, the ability and actual work is laid out. I see myself as someone who works really hard setting myself challenging goals and high standards. But the beginning of that process must admit into the equation that motivation must begin with the self. It must come from within."

Tanya has high praises for Digicel's EMBA programme which she says, "... has played an important role in my development".She stresses that Digicel prefers to develop its people and promote within the company. She believes that the company has an ideal model worth copying by other similar entities.

Tanya is not all work although work is always close to her. "On weekends whenever we have some time we fly over to Australia.Sometimes I invite over the other Jamaicans here (a total of five) and we share Sunday dinner of rice and peas and chicken. Other times we just go island exploring.

Tanya is celebrating her wedding anniversary, the first year. I wish her well and expect that when next we speak, she will be heading for the sky.

To such people, that is the only limit to their ambitions.

Spice Girls in Concert, Madison Square Gardens

The Return of The Spice Girls, Madison Square Gardens, NYC
Feb. 18, 2008

We entered the room and the first row was filled with pre-teens. We were more than a decade older than this crowd, but we didn't care. We were here to see the iconic Spice Girls. So what if the majority of the adults there were parents of the tween set? Pride wasn't going to get between us and our girls.

The lights went out indicating that the show was about to start. The high-pitched screams - which were to be our constant companions throughout the show - started and increased to a deafening pitch once the Spice Girls appeared on stage.

Posh was in a shiny, skin tight, rubber outfit. Scary was in her typical leopard print. Ginger had on a cute, very short dress. Baby, was demurely attired in a girly dress which graced her mid-thigh. Sporty, I believe wore a pants suit. Everyone, except Sporty, had cleavage exposed. Everyone looked extremely hot - beautiful, toned and ready for action.

The outfits were one of the highlights of the show. Where can I buy a pair of Scary's red hot boots? Ginger's fitted dress, the color of the British flag, was stunning. Not to mention Posh's black lingerie-looking 'I am not sure what', with an extended train at the back.

Although a majority of the fans were part of the teen or pre-teen set, you really couldn't tell by some of the elements included in the show. For example:

  • Scary's skin-tight leopard print outfit, which she accompanied with a mic-whip, i.e. a microphone with a whip-like extension, which Scary proceeded to swing like only a whip should be swung

  • Scary gyrating and then straddling a ladder

  • Screen shots of Posh in a bra and S&M looking black outfit

  • Each girl holding the end of a dog collar, which was tied around a man's neck; said man happened to be crawling on all fours in front of each one of the Spices

Hopefully, the tweens won't understand?

Aside from (or because of??) those non-PG 13 episodes, the show was a lot of fun. Girl power was alive and breathing all over you. You became nostalgic of happy, simple times...innocence with shiny red boots.

Word on the street is that the girls are canceling their tour. The rumor says that their egos are too big for one show to contain. It's a pity, because the show was fantastic. Forget about the fact that only Sporty Spice can sing and that none of them can really dance. Those ladies put on a marvelous spectacle, full of glitter, sexy outfits and charismatic performances. Posh Spice even deigned to smile at the audience.

Posh appeared to be the most popular Spice - maybe one of the reasons for the tour cancellation? Each time the lights focused on Posh, the audience's screams rose to a volume higher than for any of the other girls. I am not surprised. Posh has made a name for herself as 1/2 of the great 'Posh & Becks' celebrity couple - most famous couple in Britain, and who are working very hard for similar fame here in the U.S. Posh can't sing to save her life, but that is quite inconsequential. She has created a phenomenon and you are entertained by just watching her strut and pose.

Cute moment of the night went to the portion of the show where all the ladies - sans Sporty - brought their children on to the stage and jointly performed "Mama". Posh had Brooklyn, Romeo and Cruz. Baby had Beau. Ginger held Bluebell Madonna and Scary was with Eddie Murphy's, Angel Iris. Sporty shared kids with the Spice mothers during the song. Cruz - Posh's youngest - showed signs of being just like mom, i.e. craving the spotlight. Little Cruz wowed the audience with slick break dancing moves, a few hand stands and flips...all of this and he's only 3 years old. He had to be pulled off of the stage by his mummy.

Girls, please reconsider and continue with the tour. Each one of you rocked the house. You all look great. Your fans appreciate you and are in need of you. Get over yourselves and perform. You know you want to.

Bubbling

In this bubble, there is a desert
there is darkness
Thirst, fear and sadness
Over and over and over again

He looks at me
I don't see
I am distracted by a pointless journey
Confused by a pointless purpose
I miss his reminder

He never stops watching
I am weary of the journey
Frustrated by the waste
The pain forces me to stop, reevaluate....remember
I look at him

I can't believe I didn't remember
I created that bubble, that desert
His was always a better plan, ultimate fulfillment
Somehow, I still return to the created bubble
He patiently waits
Until I burst it once and for all

Can you be too enthusiastic?

I recently caught a portion of the Rachel Ray talk show/cooking show. Boy! She is a bundle of enthusiasm. It's high pitched. It's "great"s and "awesome"s. It's a wide, bright-eyed grin. But is it too much?

Sometimes I had to put the TV on mute, because it started to grate on my nerves. I love happy. I love enthusiasm. But, I think you can cross the line into becoming unreal...a tad fake and Rachel, I think you cross that line. The show was quite enjoyable, when Rachel calmed down, spoke in her inside voice and was her, nice, pleasant persona. I could actually take the show off of mute during those times.

You got Beef? Moo-ove it to the trash. USDA recalls 143 Million Pounds of Beef

The USDA has issued the largest beef recall in U.S. history: 143 million pounds of beef recalled from a slaughterhouse accused of shoddy treatment of cows. According to CNN, 143 Million lbs. is about enough meat for everyone in the U.S. - man, woman and child - to each have 2 hamburgers.

The meat in question is from the Hallmark/Westland Meat Packing Company in Chino, California. The recall is Class II, i.e. there is little risk of illness in humans. However, the USDA has said that there is a "remote probability" that the beef could cause illness.

Federal officials issued the recall after seeing undercover videos shot by a humane society inside the slaughterhouse. In the videos you see 'downer animals', i.e. cattle too sick to even stand, being kicked, jabbed near their eyes and aggressively pushed with a forklift in order to force them to get on their feet for slaughter. The cattle were butchered and made ready for human consumption, without the proper examination for chronic illnesses by an authorized inspector. This violation of federal regulations has apparently been running unchecked for the last two years.

Sick and sad, but the uglier part is that the beef from this company is primarily used for school lunch programs: ~37 Million pounds of the meat has already been distributed to schools.

The President of Westland Meat, Steve Mendell, issued the following statement, " We have taken swift action regarding the two employees identified on the video and have already implemented aggressive measures to ensure all employees follow our humane handling policies and procedures."

Vegan, anyone?

John Grisham - The Early Days

When he first started writing, Grisham says, he had "these little rituals that were silly and brutal but very important."

"The alarm clock would go off at 5, and I'd jump in the shower. My office was 5 minutes away. And I had to be at my desk, at my office, with the first cup of coffee, a legal pad and write the first word at 5:30, five days a week."

His goal: to write a page every day. Sometimes that would take 10 minutes, sometimes an hour; ofttimes he would write for two hours before he had to turn to his job as a lawyer, which he never especially enjoyed. In the Mississippi Legislature, there were "enormous amounts of wasted time" that would give him the opportunity to write.

"So I was very disciplined about it," he says, then quickly concedes he doesn't have such discipline now: "I don't have to."

LOL!!! And the world is flat, right?

Relax - He's Got It

Psalm 37

1 Do not fret because of evil men or be envious of those who do wrong;
2 for like the grass they will soon wither, like green plants they will soon die away.

3Trust in the LORD and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture.
4 Delight yourself in the LORD and he will give you the desires of your heart.
5 Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him and he will do this:
6 He will make your righteousness shine like the dawn, the justice of your cause like the noonday sun.
7 Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for him; do not fret when men succeed in their ways, when they carry out their wicked schemes.
8 Refrain from anger and turn from wrath; do not fret—it leads only to evil.
9 For evil men will be cut off, but those who hope in the LORD will inherit the land.
10 A little while, and the wicked will be no more; though you look for them, they will not be found.
11 But the meek will inherit the land and enjoy great peace.
12 The wicked plot against the righteous and gnash their teeth at them;
13 but the Lord laughs at the wicked, for he knows their day is coming.
14 The wicked draw the sword and bend the bow to bring down the poor and needy, to slay those whose ways are upright.
15 But their swords will pierce their own hearts, and their bows will be broken.
16 Better the little that the righteous have than the wealth of many wicked;
17 for the power of the wicked will be broken, but the LORD upholds the righteous.
18 The days of the blameless are known to the LORD, and their inheritance will endure forever.
19 In times of disaster they will not wither; in days of famine they will enjoy plenty.
20 But the wicked will perish:The LORD's enemies will be like the beauty of the fields, they will vanish—vanish like smoke.
21 The wicked borrow and do not repay, but the righteous give generously;
22 those the LORD blesses will inherit the land, but those he curses will be cut off.
23 If the LORD delights in a man's way, he makes his steps firm;
24 though he stumble, he will not fall, for the LORD upholds him with his hand.
25 I was young and now I am old, yet I have never seen the righteous forsaken or their children begging bread.
26 They are always generous and lend freely; their children will be blessed.
27 Turn from evil and do good; then you will dwell in the land forever.
28 For the LORD loves the just and will not forsake his faithful ones. They will be protected forever, but the offspring of the wicked will be cut off;
29 the righteous will inherit the land and dwell in it forever.
30 The mouth of the righteous man utters wisdom, and his tongue speaks what is just.
31 The law of his God is in his heart; his feet do not slip.
32 The wicked lie in wait for the righteous, seeking their very lives;
33 but the LORD will not leave them in their power or let them be condemned when brought to trial.
34 Wait for the LORD and keep his way. He will exalt you to inherit the land; when the wicked are cut off, you will see it.
35 I have seen a wicked and ruthless man flourishing like a green tree in its native soil,
36 but he soon passed away and was no more; though I looked for him, he could not be found.
37 Consider the blameless, observe the upright; there is a future for the man of peace.
38 But all sinners will be destroyed; the future of the wicked will be cut off.
39 The salvation of the righteous comes from the LORD; he is their stronghold in time of trouble.
40 The LORD helps them and delivers them; he delivers them from the wicked and saves them, because they take refuge in him.

Email - What is That?

I met someone recently on the subway - he was a gentleman in his 30s. We started to speak about email and the Internet. He looked confused when I said email. He actually said 'what is that?'. Somehow, I didn't fall off of my subway seat, but kept talking. I couldn't believe that a person in this day and age, someone of that age group even, living in the U.S of A, would not have used email, much less heard about it.

I frankly got a little scared for the fellow. I thought about the dinosaurs that became extinct and felt that the world would leave this poor man behind. I gently encouraged him to take a course so that he could get acquainted with the WWW. He smiled and agreed that he didn't want to be left in the Stone Age. Phew! He got the message.

Why intentionally make yourself extinct? Plus, who can remember life without email, blackberries, Google, the Internet, blogs, etc. And even if you could, why go back?

25 Questions for Barack Obama

You've been campaigning 16 hours a day for months. Lost any weight?
I have. Probably 7, 8 lbs. I'm not a snacker, so I wait until I can sit down to a proper meal - and I don't always get the chance.

I see you've got your nicorette here. How's the no-smoking thing going?
Good. I'm done. That was always a little over-hyped. You know, I'd sneak maybe three, four cigarettes a day, then I could go three or four days without one.

What do you miss most about life before all this?
Anonymity. Being able to take my kids [daughters Malia, 9, and Sasha, 6] to the zoo without attracting attention. I'm in the wrong profession for that now.

Have you tried a disguise?
A baseball cap and dressing down in jeans and an overcoat works if I move fast enough. The problem is my ears are pretty prominent.

What are some of the cool perks?
I can't lie: It's easier to get reservations when I want to take my wife [Michelle, 44] out to dinner.

When's the last time you did that?
On her birthday, January 17. We were in Nevada for the caucus.

What was your best effort for Valentine's Day?
Interesting question. [Pause.] I'm so good to her in so many ways, no one gesture of undying love really stands out.

What's the first piece of legislation you hope to sign as President?
Health care for all Americans.

First Executive Order?
A series of orders initiating a phased withdrawal of our troops from Iraq.

What about troops who lost buddies there and don't want to leave yet and let those deaths be in vain?
Listen, I would say to them, our soldiers have performed magnificently, and they succeeded in the missions that have been given them. So they have not been lost in vain.

You picked Renegade as your Secret Service code name.
It had to start with 'R' and it suited the upstart nature of our campaign.

What's the last thing you prayed for?
Every night I thank God for all He's given me, ask Him to protect my family, to forgive me my sins and foolishness and to make me an instrument of His work.

Any particular foolishness?
Oh, all of it. I am reminded every day - if not by events, then by my wife- that I am not a perfect man.

What's the last thing that made you cry?
My girls. They'll say something that makes me realize how quickly they're growing up, how good-hearted they are. Malia is wise and thoughtful. Sasha is the comedian in the family.

What's the funniest thing she's said lately?
I was sleeping late with the girls, and Michelle, who always wakes up early, turns on the lights. And Sasha says, 'Aw, Mommy, we are peace!' She meant 'peaceful,' I gather. Now, whenever Michelle and I want quiet time, we say, 'We are peace!'

What's the first thing they want when you walk through the door?
Hugs and kisses from their daddy. Malia has a key-chain collection and Sasha collects snow globes, so I try to make sure I've picked up some along the way.

How would you describe your look?
Simple. My theory on style is find something that fits and buy five - like blue suits. They come in handy when you're running for President.

You used to have an Afro. What made you give it up?
My sort of half-Afro lasted well beyond the time it was fashionable, mainly because I didn't want to spend $20 a week on haircuts.

What was your last splurge?
My wife. Her birthday present. It was a necklace. And it wasn't fake.

First concert?
Elton John, when I was 10. The music was terrific, but I didn't get all the plumage. I guess I get it now.

Sonny & Cher or Donny & Marie?
Sonny & Cher, even though Sonny ended up Republican. I thought Cher was pretty hot.

Fair enough. Marcia Brady or Laurie Partridge?
I'm trying to remember what Laurie Partridge looked like. Oh yeah. Susan Dey from L.A Law. Definitely her.

Who would you most like to meet?
Bruce Springsteen. He strikes me as a good person.

Would you camp out for Hanna Montana tickets for your girls?
I should amend what I said earlier about the greatest perk. I was able to get them tickets already, which raised me tremendously in their eyes.

Michelle's taken you to task for not picking up your socks. Equal time: what does she do that drives you crazy?
I will display the wisdom I will display as President and decline to answer. My wife has no flaws.

One Vanity License Plate? $14 Million. Thought of ponying up so much moola for a plate: Priceless

At a charity auction on Saturday in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Saeed Khouri - a member of a very wealth family in Abu Dhabi -, was the winning bidder for a vanity license plate, printed simply with "1". Khouri paid $14 Million for the honor.

I am still in shock, but must type a few more sentences. UAE has been auctioning off vanity plates since May 2007 and proceeds go to a rehabilitation center for victims of traffic accidents. On Saturday, proceeds totaled $24 Million for 90 plates.

Ok, I am heading back to my state of shock.

Pure Beige

Vanilla icecream, white rice, unflavoured tofu and beige thoughts
Long stretches of nothingness
Covered in lazy, hiding in sleep
Close friendships with the useless inanimates

Waiting on something, dying for anything

Searching, Begging
Intervene
Infuse color
Free us from this dreary, tasteless landscape of pure beige

Love Clinton, But This Sounds a Bit Narcissistic

This article was posted on CNN today. In it Bill Clinton accuses Obama of ignoring his white house legacy.

-----------

Former President Clinton on Friday accused Sen. Barack Obama, his wife's rival for the Democratic nomination, of trying to ignore any accomplishments they achieved during their years in the White House.

"You have one candidate who's made the explicit argument that the only way we can change America is to move into a post-partisan future and therefore we have to eliminate from consideration for the presidency anybody who made good things happen in the '90s or stopped bad things from happening in this decade," said Clinton, who was winding up a day of East Texas campaign appearances for his wife, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton.

"It doesn't matter how much good you did," the former president said at Stephen F. Austin University. "We've got to get rid of you because you had to fight to make something good happen. You had to fight to stop something bad from happening. And if you fought, you made somebody mad, we ought to give you an old watch and retire you. You can't possibly make a contribution to America's future."

Without mentioning Obama by name, Clinton said the Illinois senator was promoting a position that it's "actually an advantage to not have any experience because you've not made anybody mad."

"It's been very effective," Clinton said. "It's already taken four good candidates out. It would have taken Hillary out if she didn't have so much grass-roots support and so much guts." Clinton said his wife's position is to "bridge the party divides when we can, but we also need to be prepared to fight."

Happy Valentine's Day!!!

Job's The Man

That's all you got? Gimme more.

- Sitting in my seat on the plane, minding my own business, planning to drink my ice cold water. Mr. Ex-Footballer returns to his seat, not gracefully, and upends the entire contents of my water on to my lap

- Checking into hotel after long day, waiting 15 mins for manager to return as he is the only one who knows which rooms are clean. Finally get assigned a room. Enter room, walk a few steps, see opened suitcases and a used bathroom. Wait half-an-hour until I am re-assigned to a new room, that is not only clean, but where I am the only occupant

- Logging onto computer and greeted by blue screen of death. Several reboots later, blue screen of death still grins at me. Well, there's always the Blackberry, except of course for the North American outage and the Sim Card Errors that choose to coincide with the blue screen dilemma

- Ordering a veggie burrito at the airport and requesting that it be cut in half. No. They can't cut it in half, because the law in that state says it is illegal for them to cut people's sandwiches. However, I was given a plastic knife and plate so that I could cut the burrito in half myself. Who cuts a fat veggie burrito with a plastic knife? (Note: I am still stunned about the law...need to research that one)

Through it all I think of Job in the Old Testament. I am alive. I am healthy. There is no death. I have food to eat and family and friends and faith. I am not Job. These situations are nothing compared to what he went through and survived and was blessed.

Bring it on. Gimme more.

Barack Obama - "Yes We Can"

It was a creed written into the founding documents that declared the destiny of a nation.

Yes we can.

It was whispered by slaves and abolitionists as they blazed a trail toward freedom.

Yes we can.

It was sung by immigrants as they struck out from distant shores and pioneers who pushed westward against an unforgiving wilderness.

Yes we can.

It was the call of workers who organized; women who reached for the ballots; a President who chose the moon as our new frontier; and a King who took us to the mountaintop and pointed the way to the Promised Land.

Yes we can to justice and equality.

Yes we can to opportunity and prosperity.

Yes we can heal this nation.

Yes we can repair this world.

Yes we can.

We know the battle ahead will be long, but always remember that no matter what obstacles stand in our way, nothing can stand in the way of the power of millions of voices calling for change.

We have been told we cannot do this by a chorus of cynics...they will only grow louder and more dissonant ........... We've been asked to pause for a reality check. We've been warned against offering the people of this nation false hope.

But in the unlikely story that is America, there has never been anything false about hope.

Now the hopes of the little girl who goes to a crumbling school in Dillon are the same as the dreams of the boy who learns on the streets of LA; we will remember that there is something happening in America; that we are not as divided as our politics suggests; that we are one people; we are one nation; and together, we will begin the next great chapter in the American story with three words that will ring from coast to coast; from sea to shining sea --

Yes. We. Can.

Butt Is It Really Appetizing?

I recently went out to dinner at a restaurant on the West Coast and saw the following meal listed on the menu:

Brasato - Braised pork butt, lacinato kale with garlic, tomatoes, and rosemary potatoes

I don't eat meat, but I was surprised that the chef thought that using the word "butt" to describe any meal would be appetizing. I dare say that even meat eaters would agree with me. Right, Donald? (http://kerijam.blogspot.com/2007/07/interview-with-meat-eater.html).

When the waitress came by I decided to get to the bottom (pun intended) of the mystery. She said that she would ask the chef and get back to me. A few minutes later she returned and explained that the chef hates the word "rump" and refuses to have that word on the menu. Hence, the use of the more acceptable "butt".

Go figure. Don't mess with an artist.

Can Rappers Act?

Rappers seem to be taking over a lot of the prime roles in movie land these days and some actors are upset! Upset enough to write a new play about it.

J. Kyle Manzay writes, directs and stars in a new play - The Actor's Rap! - a comedy focusing on who has the credibility: actors or rappers? The storyline centers around a "group of actors who are frustrated by the rappers turned actors who keep stealing their roles. Taking matters into their own hands, the actors kidnap today's hottest rapper in order to secure a coveted role in an upcoming film."

If you are in NY, go check out the play. For more details see: http://www.theactorsrap.com/.

Her Crush Don't Mean a Thing - Obama Girl Doesn't Vote

She gained instant celebrity across the Internet from last summer's music video "I Got a Crush on Obama", but 26-year old Amber Lee Ettinger ended up being all show and very little substance. Amber left Obama hanging on Super Tuesday. Somehow, while majorly crushing on Obama, she didn't get around to voting for him. Nice example! Where's your O-face?

Amber initially tried to explain her actions by saying that she didn't vote because she wasn't registered in New York, but in New Jersey. When reminded that New Jersey also held a primary, Amber searched for a more valid excuse. She apparently felt that the 'The Dog Ate My Homework' wasn't fitting and so instead picked the tried and true 'I was sick' to justify her misstep.

Poor Amber was too sick in the city and so unable to make it over to New Jersey for the big day. Amber further added that she "was in Arizona for the Super Bowl — every time I get in the airplane I get sick". To her credit, Amber did feel some remorse, “I’m a little upset but I really couldn’t help it.”

Pointy Haired Boss Shines Again

Nothing Like Mummy's Discipline

Mum, when I grow up I want to run around naked

Mark Roberts is one of the world's most famous serial streakers. He has streaked at the FA Cup Final. Streaked at a Mr. Universe Contest and a Miss Word contest. Streaked at the bull run in Pamplona. Streaked at the Royal Ascot. Streaked at Wimbledon. Even streaked at the Super Bowl where Janet Jackson had her infamous wardrobe malfunction. Mark has streaked his way into stardom, sharing what his 'mama gave him' over 300 times to International audiences.

Mark's passion is to bring laugher to the world. "I don't have much going for me down there, so when I run out on the field, people think I'm a woman with small breasts," Roberts said. "But I'm not even conscious of it. We are what we are. I just want to make people laugh."

So, how does one end up becoming a full-time serial streaker? Mark started in 1993 as part of a drunken bet. After seeing a female streaker at a rugby match in Hong Kong, Mark told his friends that anyone could streak. They dared him, and in a drunken stupor he agreed and streaked twice. And he continued to build dramatically from that point on. Mark's mother says that he "was a normal kid but all of the sudden got a little crazy. I think I must have dropped him on his head or something."

Mark's "job" is not without its risks. He has had to pay fines and court costs. "It's the only job where I have to pay to go to work," Roberts said. "But every time you plan on doing something like this, you're going to get caught." In addition, Mark is banned from attending any soccer game in England and Wales. He needs to surrender his passport and important documents before football games and his passport forbids him from ever entering Hong Kong.

Mark is still motivated by having a laugh and so retirement may not come for some time. In the interim, Mark is enjoying his popularity and is able to support himself based on corporate donations and funds from his friends.
