I was shocked yesterday to learn that Heath Ledger, 28, had died.
I was about to board an airplane when I heard the news. At that point in the evening, it was noted that Heath was found dead in a lower Manhattan apartment. Anti-anxiety pills were close to his body, but the source of death was unknown. I could not believe that Heath had died. There were no outward signals indicating that this Academy Award-nominated actor had experienced any struggles with addiction. He seemed to be a happy-go-lucky- guy, recently split from his girlfriend - actress Michelle Williams - , successfully securing dates with top models and actresses, and the very proud father of a 2-year old, Matilda Rose.
Now he is dead. Wow.
The NY Police Department believe that Heath's death may be due to a possible drug overdose. At this stage, the police do not suspect suicide. Heath was found naked, lying face down on the floor at the foot of his bed by his housekeeper, Theresa Solomon, 56, at 3pm - she was trying to wake him for an appointment with his masseuse.
Some sources say that Ledger was very depressed. However, Ledger's family called his death "very tragic, untimely and accidental." His father - Kim Ledger - went on to say that, "Heath has touched so many people on so many different levels during his short life, but few had the pleasure of truly knowing him. He was a down-to-earth, generous, kindhearted, life-loving, unselfish individual extremely inspirational to many."
I continue to be reminded of how short and precious life is...and that it is unpredictable. You just never know. My deepest condolences go out to Heath's family and friends, and in particular his young daughter, Matilda Rose.
Update
The autopsy on Heath Ledger has been ruled inconclusive and it may take another 10 to 14 days to determine the cause of his death.
